Polyester is the material sublimation ink actually bonds to; cotton, untreated wood and uncoated materials don't take it the same way, since the ink has nothing to chemically grip. That's the reason a dedicated sublimation blank uses a polyester top with a coating tuned for even ink uptake, rather than a generic mat that happens to look similar. And because sublimation ink doesn't print white, the blank itself needs to start white or very light, colour comes only from what you print on top.
