Indoor vs. Outdoor Door Mats: Why the Backing Material Is Different
Two custom door mats can have the same printed face and completely different lives, because of what's underneath. Here's how backing decides where a door mat belongs.
The main difference between indoor and outdoor custom door mats is the backing. Indoor printed door mats usually have a latex or TPR backing: lighter, flexible and non-slip on smooth floors. Outdoor door mats use a rubber or TPR backing that stays flat and grips through rain, sun and temperature swings. The printed face can look identical, which is exactly why buyers get caught out.
The backings you'll be offered
- Latex: applied as a foam and cured onto the back of the mat. It's light, flexible and cost-effective, and grips well on indoor hard floors. It's the standard choice for printed home and retail mats.
- TPR (thermoplastic rubber): a soft, flexible non-slip backing used on indoor printed mats and on outdoor mats too.
- Rubber: bonded to the face by vulcanizing under heat and pressure. It's heavier, lies flat, resists curling and handles weather. This is the outdoor and commercial backing, and the one on our washable rental mats.
- PVC: paired with a polypropylene face for value rental mats, where budget matters more than wash life.
Why latex-backed mats don't belong outside
Leave a latex-backed mat on an exposed step through a wet winter and a summer of direct sun and you'll see why. Independent mat guides such as Matterly's outdoor mat guide point to the same thing: latex and vinyl backings break down and shed sooner outdoors, while rubber holds up to heat and cold and keeps its grip.
Indoors it's a different story. A latex backing on a hallway or shop floor is light, stays put and is easy to wash, so there's no reason to pay for rubber there.
Custom door mats for outdoor entrances
An outdoor custom door mat needs three things from its construction. The backing has to stay flat when wet and cold. The face has to scrape and hold dirt and water. The print has to survive UV. Our outdoor rubber mats use a nylon or polyester face on a rubber or TPR backing, printed with CMYK inkjet that resists weathering and fading.
Outdoor constructions are designed for continuous outdoor use. Indoor constructions are not. If you're buying for a range that will be sold for both, say so up front and we'll quote them as two products rather than one mat that half-suits both places.
Custom door mats for indoor use
Inside the door, the job changes. The mat catches what the outdoor mat missed, sits on a smooth floor and gets looked at more. What about commercial and rental entrances?
A commercial entrance takes the worst of both: outdoor dirt, indoor floors, and constant traffic. Add laundering if the mats are rented. That's why rental programs use a nylon face vulcanized onto rubber. Ours is machine-washable 300+ times. A solution-dyed polyester and rubber option is washable and colour-fast, and polypropylene on PVC is the value option. Cleaning by backing type
- Any mat: shake, brush or vacuum regularly.
- Latex- and TPR-backed printed mats: wash and air-dry.
- Rubber-backed rental constructions: machine-washable; tell us your wash process and we'll confirm the right construction.
