Why Standard Rug Sizes Don't Fit Most Commercial Spaces
Standard rug sizes are built for a rectangular room. Most commercial floor plans — lobbies, reception areas, retail aisles — aren't one.
Standard sizes — 3×5′, 4×6′, 5×7′ — are built for a rectangular room. Most commercial floor plans aren't one: they have reception desks, support columns, angled entrances and traffic patterns a fixed rectangle can't follow.
The gap problem
A standard rug dropped into a space it doesn't quite fit leaves a strip of exposed hard floor around the edges. That gap isn't just a look — it's where dirt and moisture collect fastest, right at the boundary between protected and unprotected floor, and it's usually the first thing to look worn.
Obstacles a standard rectangle can't work around
A reception desk sitting in the middle of what would otherwise be rug space, a support column at one corner, an entrance door swinging across a straight edge — a custom shape or a cutout solves each of these. A rectangle just runs into them.
What custom sizing actually requires from you
Measure the full walking path, not just the room's stated dimensions, and note where anything fixed — desks, columns, doorframes — sits inside that path. If the space isn't a simple rectangle, a rough floor plan tells your supplier more than a single length-by-width number ever will.
Face and backing don't change with size
Going custom doesn't mean trading down on material. The same faux wool, flannel or nylon face and TPR or latex backing used in standard 3×5′, 4×6′ and 5×7′ sizes carry over into a custom shape — the construction stays the same, only the outline changes.
