Custom Bar Mats: Moulded PVC vs. Printed Rubber, Sizes and What to Ask Before You Order
Custom bar mats come in two builds that look similar in a catalogue and behave very differently on a bar. Here's how to pick one, size it and brief your supplier.
Custom bar mats are made in two main constructions: a moulded PVC or rubber mat with a raised grid and a 3D logo, or a printed mat with a fabric face bonded to a nitrile rubber base. Pick moulded for wet, high-volume service stations. Pick printed when the artwork is detailed or photographic. Everything else (size, colour, quantity) follows from that choice.
The two ways custom bar mats are built
Most brewery and bar buyers ordering custom bar mats only find out there are two builds when the samples arrive. So here they are side by side.
- Moulded PVC / rubber bar mats: the whole mat is one piece of food-safe PVC or rubber. The top is a raised grid of nubs that lifts glasses out of spilled liquid, and raised edges keep the spill on the mat. Your logo is moulded in as a raised (or debossed) shape in its own colour. It feels premium and survives a lot of washing, but it needs a mould made for your artwork.
- Printed rubber bar mats: a polyester non-woven fabric face printed in full colour, bonded to a nitrile rubber backing. A typical spec on our printed runners is 1.5mm thick. Because it's printed rather than moulded, gradients, photos and fine type all work, and there's no mould cost. The fabric soaks up drips like a coaster instead of pooling them.
Moulded or printed: which one fits your venue?
Think about what happens on the mat at 11pm on a Saturday.
A cocktail station pouring hundreds of drinks gets flooded, wiped, flooded again. That's moulded territory for custom bar mats. The raised grid keeps glass bases dry, the edges hold the liquid, and at close you rinse it or run it through the glasswasher.
Now picture a taproom counter, a café pass or a promo kit for a spirits launch. Volume is lower and the mat's real job is to look good in photos. A printed rubber bar mat carries a full-colour label design that a moulded mat can't reproduce.
One rule of thumb we give buyers: if your logo is a flat, one- or two-colour mark, moulded usually wins. If it needs more than four colours or includes a photo, go printed.
Custom bar mat sizes: common formats and limits
There's no single industry size, and you shouldn't force your artwork into one. Bar mats are made to your bar or counter length. For printed bar mats, these are the formats buyers ask for most:
- 440 × 250mm: a service-station or coffee-machine mat.
- 600 × 400mm: a larger station mat or back-bar mat.
- 750 × 500mm: a wide mat for a cocktail station or counter display.
- Long, narrow runners for the bar rail, cut to the length you give us.
- Maximum printed size is roughly 1000 × 1045mm, in 1.5–2mm thickness.
Before you order custom bar mats, measure the actual rail or counter, not the drawing. Send the length, depth and anything the mat has to sit around (drip trays, taps, a glass rinser) and we'll confirm the mat size before artwork starts. Want a matching set? Logo methods and artwork files
For a moulded logo, send vector artwork (AI, EPS or PDF) with Pantone references for each colour. Each colour in a moulded mat is a separate fill, so very thin lines or tiny text may need thickening to mould cleanly. We'll flag that at the proof stage rather than after the mould is cut.
For printed custom bar mats, a high-resolution file is enough. Keep important text away from the outer edge, where the mat's border sits. Either way you get a free digital proof to approve before production, and that's the moment to check colours against your brand guide. It's much cheaper than finding a wrong red on 500 mats.
Are custom bar mats dishwasher safe?
Many rubber and PVC constructions can be washed by hand or in a commercial dishwasher, but not every build suits both. Tell us how your venues clean their bar gear and we'll recommend the construction and send care instructions you can pass on to staff.
MOQ, samples and lead time
Minimum order depends on size and build. A moulded mat has a mould cost to spread, a printed one doesn't, and we confirm both MOQ and unit price in the quotation. Stock items typically ship in 7–15 days. Custom orders take 20–30 days after artwork approval, and a moulded order needs the mould finished first, so build that into a product launch or a promotion calendar.
If you're buying for a beverage brand rather than one bar, ask whether a physical pre-production sample can be made before the full run is released. It's the simplest way to avoid surprises on colour and logo height.
A quick brief to send your supplier
- Construction: moulded PVC/rubber or printed fabric on rubber.
- Size(s) and quantity per size, plus bar rail or counter dimensions.
- Logo file (vector) and Pantone colours.
- Base colour of the mat.
- Cleaning method at the venue (hand wash or dishwasher).
- Delivery date you're working back from.
