Ask ten golfers what makes a putting mat feel real and you'll get ten different answers — pace, true roll, how it looks on camera for a retail display. Thickness is only one part of that, and it's not the part most buyers assume.
Thickness affects pace, not just feel
A thicker nap and denser backing slow the ball down and can mask a slightly uneven sub-floor; a thinner, tighter construction rolls faster and shows every inconsistency in the surface underneath. Neither is objectively "more realistic" — it depends on whether the mat needs to play fast for a serious practice tool or forgiving for a retail demo unit that gets rolled and unrolled daily.
