A pad that relies on a high-friction, open-cell foam surface — rather than adhesive — holds a rug in place without leaving sticky residue behind when it's eventually moved or replaced. Adhesive-backed pads can look grippier in a showroom, but the residue problem shows up months later, often right when a floor is being sold or refinished.

PVC rug pads with a closed-cell structure are waterproof and don't absorb spills — wine, cooking oil, pet accidents — the way an open-cell foam or EVA pad does. An open-cell pad that's soaked up a spill stays damp against the floor finish long after the surface looks dry.
