Carpet Protector Runners for Moves, Renovations and Events: A Buyer's Guide
A clear PVC carpet protector runner keeps boots, trolleys and spills off the carpet while people work or walk over it. Here's how movers, renovation contractors, hotels and event venues choose the base, size the runs and order runners by the roll.

A moving crew carries a sofa down a cream-carpeted hallway on a wet afternoon. A decorator's ladder goes up and down the same landing for three days. A hotel ballroom hosts a trade show with a thousand visitors and a catering trolley. The carpet survives all three only if something sits between it and the traffic.
This guide is for removal companies, renovation contractors, hotels and event venues buying carpet protection in bulk. It covers how a clear PVC carpet protector runner works, which base to choose and how to order it.
The short answer
A carpet protector runner is a clear PVC or vinyl sheet rolled out over carpet along the route people walk. It blocks dirt, spills and wear while leaving the carpet visible. Choose a studded base to grip carpet, order it by the roll in the widths and lengths your routes need, and cut pieces to length on site.
What a carpet protector runner does
A carpet protector creates a barrier between the carpet and stains, dust, foot traffic, pets and furniture dents. Because it's usually transparent, the carpet's colour and pattern still show, which matters in a client's home or a hotel corridor where the floor is part of the look.
Our clear PVC carpet protector runner is made in custom lengths and widths, with a smooth or studded base, and supplied on a roll or as cut pieces.
Studded or smooth: pick the base for the floor
- Studded base for carpet. Small studs on the underside press into the pile and stop the runner creeping under foot traffic or trolley wheels. This is the base for carpeted hallways, stairs landings and event carpet.
- Smooth base for hard floors. Studs would mark a hard floor, so use a smooth base where the route crosses tile, vinyl or wood.
- Mixed routes need both. Tell us how much of the route is carpet and how much is hard floor, and order the two bases in matching widths.
The same logic applies to chair mats: carpet versions use studs, hard-floor versions don't. Our studded or smooth guide covers this in more detail.
Who uses runners, and how
Removal companies. Lay a runner from the front door to each room before the first item comes in, and lift it when the last box is down. A roll in the van covers most homes; carry a narrower width for stairs landings and corridors.
Renovation and fit-out contractors. Painters, carpenters and installers walk the same path for days. A runner along that path keeps paint drips, plaster dust and boot dirt off carpet you aren't replacing.
Hotels. Corridors and function rooms take heavy traffic during refurbishments, deliveries and large events. A clear runner protects the carpet while guests still see it.
Event venues and exhibitions. Main aisles and catering routes take the worst of an event. Run protection along those routes and leave the rest of the carpet open.
Sizing: order by the route, not by the room
- Measure the walking routes: front door to rooms, corridor lengths, aisles, catering paths.
- Choose a width that covers the route people actually use, with room for a trolley or a person carrying a box.
- Order full rolls for long runs and cut pieces for short ones; runners are made in custom lengths and widths.
- Overlap pieces at joins rather than leaving gaps, and keep cut ends flat so they don't catch a foot or a wheel.
What a runner won't do
A runner protects the surface of the carpet. It won't stop water that has already soaked through, it won't fix existing stains, and it shouldn't be used as a permanent floor covering in a wet entrance. For a permanent mat at a door, use an entrance mat instead (see the door mat range).
Care and reuse
Clear PVC is wipe-clean: sweep off grit and wipe spills with a damp cloth. Roll a runner face-out for storage so it lies flat again when you next roll it out. A runner that's cleaned and stored this way can go back on the van for the next job.
How to order
Tell us the widths and total lengths you need, whether each route is carpet or hard floor, and whether you want rolls or cut pieces. MOQ and lead time are confirmed in the quote. See the carpet protector range or send us your requirements.
FAQ
What is a carpet protector runner? A carpet protector runner is a clear PVC or vinyl sheet laid over carpet along walking routes to block dirt, spills and wear while the carpet stays visible.
Will a carpet protector runner slip on carpet? A carpet protector runner with a studded base grips the carpet pile and resists creeping. Use a smooth base on hard floors.
Can carpet protector runners be cut to length? Yes. Carpet protector runners are made in custom lengths and widths and supplied on a roll or as cut pieces.
Are carpet protector runners reusable? A clear PVC carpet protector runner wipes clean, so a runner that's cleaned and rolled up after a job can be used again.
