Counter Mats for Phone and Telecom Stores: Plans, Prices and Promotions That Change Every Month

In a phone store, the plan prices change every month and the handset deals change every week. Here's which counter mat format telecom retailers order, why two Australian telecom retailers chose insert-window mats, and how to roll one out across every store.

Hands sliding a new printed sheet into an insert-window counter mat

A customer sits at the counter while a store assistant moves their contacts to a new phone. For ten minutes there is nothing to do but look down. Whatever is printed on the counter in front of them is the one advert they can't scroll past.

This guide is for telecom operators, phone retailers, franchise groups and the agencies that run their in-store marketing. It covers which counter mats work in phone and telecom stores, and how to order one design for every location.

The short answer

Phone and telecom stores mostly order insert-window counter mats, because plan prices and handset deals change every month and a new printed sheet costs far less than a new mat. Magnetic flip-top mats suit stores that change artwork even more often. A fully printed counter mat suits a permanent brand message or a store that rarely changes its offer.

Why insert-window mats suit telecom counters

Telecom offers have a short shelf life. A plan price, a trade-in deal or a handset launch might last four weeks. A fully printed mat would be out of date before it wears out.

An insert-window counter mat has a clear lift-up window over a PVC base. Staff lift the window, slide out last month's sheet and slide in the new one, with no tools or adhesives. The mat stays on the counter and only the paper changes, which keeps campaign costs down across many stores.

Insert-window counter mats are what two Australian telecom retailers ordered from us for their store counters. The same format has been ordered by a German lubricant brand and a US sewing-furniture maker, which tells you something: wherever the offer changes faster than the counter, the insert window wins.

Magnetic flip-top: for stores that change artwork every week

Some stores run a different promotion every week, or swap artwork for each handset launch. A magnetic flip-top counter mat has a cover held closed by magnetic strips: lift it, replace the artwork and close it again in seconds. A UK consumer-goods group chose the magnetic format for its counters.

Both formats let you change the artwork without a new mat. The difference is how often you change it and who does it; our comparison of insert-window and magnetic counter mats goes through that choice.

Fully printed: for the brand message that doesn't change

Not every counter needs a changing offer. A store-pickup desk, a business-customer counter or a repair desk can carry a permanent brand message. A printed branded counter mat has a full-colour PVC top in a matte or gloss finish on an anti-slip foam rubber base. Choose matte under bright store lighting, because matte reduces glare. A printed mat can also be die-cut to a custom shape, such as a phone outline.

Size the window for the sheet your printer already uses

Counter mats come in standard sizes of 12″×24″, 18″×36″ and 24″×48″, or a custom size. In a phone store, the counter also holds demo handsets, a card terminal and the customer's own phone, so measure the free space, not the whole counter; our counter mat size guide shows how.

On an insert-window mat, size the window first. If the window matches a sheet size your printer already produces, every monthly insert is a standard print job. The insert size, the window orientation and the number of windows can all be specified, so a long counter can carry two inserts side by side: this month's plan on the left and a handset deal on the right.

Artwork that works on a telecom counter

A customer reads the mat upside down from across the counter, or the right way up from the chair. Decide which, and lay out the artwork for that reader. Keep the price and the plan name large, and if you add a QR code to a plan page, test that it scans through the clear window. Our counter mat artwork guide covers text size, safe zones and QR codes.

Rolling out to every store

For a network of stores, use one mat size and one insert size across every location. Head office prints one batch of inserts each month and posts them to every store, and staff swap them in a minute. Our guide to logo mats for multiple locations applies the same approach to the entrance mat, so the door and the counter carry the same brand.

How to order

Send the counter dimensions, the number of stores, the format you prefer, the insert sheet size if you have one, quantities and your artwork. Stock sizes typically ship in 7–15 days and custom orders in 20–30 days; MOQ depends on size and format and is confirmed in the quote. Every layout is confirmed on a free digital proof before production. See the counter mat range or send us your store list.

FAQ

What counter mat is best for a phone store? An insert-window counter mat, because plan prices and handset deals change every month and only the printed sheet needs replacing.

Insert-window or magnetic flip-top for a telecom store? Choose insert-window for monthly changes across many stores, and magnetic flip-top if staff change the artwork every week.

Can one counter mat show two offers? Yes. An insert-window mat can have more than one window, so a long mat can carry two inserts side by side.

What sizes do counter mats come in? Standard sizes are 12″×24″, 18″×36″ and 24″×48″, and custom sizes can be made.
