Custom Drink Mats for Beverage Brands: How to Plan a Multi-Venue Rollout
A custom drink mat is a small item that ends up on hundreds of bars at once. Here's how beverage brands and distributors plan a drink mat rollout: which construction, how many per venue, how to brief artwork and when to order.

A brand manager signs off one drink mat design. A few weeks later that design sits on hundreds of bars, under every pint a bartender pours. Custom drink mats are cheap per piece, but a rollout puts the same mat in front of thousands of drinkers at once, so the decisions made before ordering matter more than the unit price.
This guide is for beverage brands, brewers, spirits companies and distributors ordering custom drink mats (also called bar runners or drip mats) for many venues at once. It covers the construction, the quantities, the artwork brief and the timing.
The short answer
For a multi-venue rollout of custom drink mats, choose sublimation-printed mats when the artwork is full-colour or the run is small, and moulded rubber or PVC mats when the logo is simple and the volume is high. Count mats per venue from the bar length and service stations, approve one digital proof, and order 20–30 days before the launch date.
Two constructions of custom drink mats
Custom drink mats are made in two ways, and the choice shapes the rest of the rollout:
- Sublimation-printed drink mats: a 400gsm polyester surface on a 1900gsm nitrile rubber backing, 3mm thick. The artwork is heat-pressed into the polyester, so photos, gradients and full label designs print with no colour limit. The polyester face absorbs drips and the nitrile backing resists seepage. Orders start at 50 pieces.
- Moulded rubber or PVC drink mats: one piece of food-safe rubber or PVC with raised drainage pins, raised edges and a moulded or printed logo. The mat holds spills on its surface and rinses clean. A moulded logo needs a mould, which is a one-off cost spread across the order.
The rule of thumb: a national rollout with a simple one- or two-colour logo suits moulded drink mats, because the mould cost disappears across thousands of pieces. A seasonal campaign, a new product launch or artwork with a photo suits sublimation. Our article on rubber, PVC and sublimation bar mats compares the materials in more detail.
How many custom drink mats each venue needs
Quantity is where rollouts go wrong. One mat per venue sounds tidy until the account manager visits a pub with a long bar and three pouring stations, and the brand's single mat sits by the till where nobody puts a glass.
Count per venue, not per account. For each venue type, note the bar length, the number of pouring stations and where the brand's taps or bottles sit. A small café pass may need one mat; a busy pub may need one per station. Group venues into two or three types, give each type a standard pack, and multiply. Then add spares for replacements, because drink mats get washed, lost and taken home.
Briefing artwork for a drink mat that works on a bar
A drink mat is seen from above, at an angle, with glasses on it. Artwork made for a poster rarely works unchanged. Keep the logo large and away from the edges, where the border sits and where glasses cover the design. Keep small print (legal lines, website addresses) readable but out of the glass zone.
Send vector artwork with Pantone references for a moulded mat, or a high-resolution file for a sublimation mat. Every design is confirmed on a free digital proof before production. That proof is the moment to check the brand colours, not after five hundred mats arrive. Our bar mat artwork and sizing guide covers file formats and sizes.
Packing custom drink mats for distribution
A rollout doesn't end at the factory gate. If the mats go to a distributor who splits them across venues, ask for them packed in venue-sized bundles rather than one bulk carton, so the sales team can hand over a pack without counting. Tell us the pack size and the outer carton labelling you need when you request a quote, and we'll confirm it before production.
Timing the order around a launch
Stock items typically ship in 7–15 days. Custom drink mats take 20–30 days after artwork approval, and a moulded order needs the mould finished first. Work back from the date the mats must be in venues: allow for proof approval, production, shipping and the distributor's own delivery round. For a launch tied to a sports event or a seasonal menu, book the slot early.
If the brand wants to test a design before a large moulded run, a small sublimation batch from 50 pieces is a practical first step.
Matching drink mats with counter branding
Drink mats sit on the bar; the till and the service counter often carry the same campaign. If the rollout includes retail or hospitality counters, custom counter mats use a similar print approach, so one artwork set can cover both. Browse the bar mat range, the sublimation printed bar mat, the rubber bar mat with custom logo, or send us your rollout plan.
FAQ
What are custom drink mats? Custom drink mats are bar mats printed or moulded with a brand's artwork, placed on bars to catch spills and advertise a drink. They are also called bar runners or drip mats.
What is the minimum order for custom drink mats? Sublimation-printed drink mats start at 50 pieces. The minimum for moulded rubber or PVC drink mats depends on size and build and is confirmed in the quote.
Which drink mat suits full-colour artwork? A sublimation-printed drink mat, because dye-sublimation prints photos and gradients with no colour limit.
How long does a custom drink mat order take? Stock items typically ship in 7–15 days; custom orders take 20–30 days after artwork approval.
