Custom Drum Rugs for Music Retailers and Drum Brands: Surface, Size, Print and Packaging

A drum rug has one job on stage: keep the kit where the drummer set it up. Here's how music retailers, drum brands and rehearsal studios specify a custom drum rug, from a surface that works with hook-and-loop to printing, sizing and packaging.

Printed drum rug with an ornate black-and-white pattern under an acoustic drum kit

Watch a drummer play a hard set on a bare stage floor. By the third song the bass drum has crept forward, the hi-hat stand has walked a few centimetres to the left, and the throne is rocking on a cable. A drum rug fixes that, and every drummer with an acoustic or electronic kit needs one.

That makes the custom drum rug a natural product for music retailers, drum brands and rehearsal studios. This guide covers what to specify when you order a custom rug or mat for resale, for a brand range, or for your own rooms.

The short answer

A custom drum rug should have a printed polyester pile surface that hook-and-loop strips grip without snagging, a non-slip TPR rubber backing, a 5mm overall thickness and bound edges. Choose the size from the kits you sell, print your logo or artwork in full colour, and confirm the layout on a proof before production.

What a drum rug has to do

A drum rug has two jobs. The first job is grip: the rug holds the bass drum spurs, pedals and stands in place while the drummer plays. The second job is floor protection: the rug keeps spurs, stand feet and throne legs off a wooden stage, a studio floor or a rented rehearsal room.

Our drum rugs also damp sound and vibration, because the pile and the rubber backing sit between the kit and the floor. That matters most in home studios and flats, where the kick drum travels through the floor long before anything else reaches the neighbours.

Surface: why hook-and-loop compatibility matters

Many drummers fix pedals and hardware to the drum rug with hook-and-loop strips. A cheap rug surface snags. The hooks pull fibres out of the pile, and after a few gigs the patch under the bass drum pedal looks worn and fuzzy.

Our drum rug surface is made to work with hook-and-loop. In repeat tests a pedal was stuck down and pulled off 30 times with no visible wear on the surface. If you sell to gigging drummers who set up and strip down every weekend, ask any supplier for the same test, and ask to see the sample afterwards.

Two drum rug constructions

We make printed drum rugs in two constructions. Both are 5mm thick with a polyester face on a 900gsm TPR non-slip backing; the difference is the weight of the face.

  • 350gsm polyester face: a heavier pile with a more premium feel underfoot. Suits a drum brand's flagship rug or a premium retail line.
  • 270gsm polyester face: lighter and more economical. Suits price-led retail ranges and promotional runs.

Not sure which one fits your range? Order a sample of each and set the same kit up on both. Drummers feel the difference faster than a spec sheet explains it.

Sizing a custom drum rug

Size the drum rug from the kits your customers play, not from a standard rug size. The rug must reach past the bass drum spurs at the front and give the throne room at the back, so the throne legs never drop off the edge mid-song.

Sizes are custom, so a retailer can offer a compact drum rug for electronic kits and practice setups and a larger rug for full acoustic kits. Two sizes cover most retail ranges. Large sizes can be sampled in quantities of 1–5 pieces before a bulk order.

Printing your logo or artwork

Drum rugs are printed in full colour, so a drum brand can put its logo along the front edge, where the audience and the camera see it. Keep the main logo out of the area the bass drum and throne will cover; the middle of a rug spends most of its life hidden under hardware.

Send vector artwork with Pantone references and confirm the layout on a free digital proof. Our logo mat artwork guide covers file formats and colour matching in more detail. The edge binding colour can be matched to the artwork too.

Packaging and fulfilment

Drum rugs ship rolled. A rug can also be rolled or vacuum-compressed inside its retail package to cut the carton size, which helps online sellers keep courier costs down. We can ship orders direct to your customers (dropshipping), which suits drum brands that sell online.

Stock items typically ship in 7–15 days and custom orders in 20–30 days, so plan product launches and tour merchandise around those lead times.

How to order

Send the sizes, quantities, artwork and packaging needs, and tell us whether the drum rugs are for retail, a brand range or your own studio. See the printed acoustic drum mat, the full sports mat range, or send us your range plan. If the same brand also needs entrance or counter mats, our article on logo mats beyond the entrance shows where else a printed mat can carry the logo.

Does Velcro work on a drum rug? Yes. Our drum rug surface is made for hook-and-loop; in repeat tests a pedal was re-stuck 30 times with no visible wear.

Does a drum rug reduce noise? A drum rug damps sound and vibration between the kit and the floor, which helps most in home studios and flats.

Can a drum rug be printed with a logo? Yes. Drum rugs are printed in full colour, and the layout is confirmed on a free digital proof.
