Custom Mat Samples and Digital Proofs: How Sampling Works Before a Bulk Order
A digital proof shows your design; a physical sample shows the mat. Here's how custom mat sampling works before a bulk order, what each step checks, how long it takes and what to look for before you approve.

The design looked perfect on screen. The mats arrived and the red was a shade darker than the brand red, the logo sat closer to the edge than anyone expected, and the backing was thinner than the one the buyer had in mind. Nothing was wrong with the order. Nobody had checked those things before it was made.
That's what custom mat sampling is for. This guide is for buyers placing a first custom order of logo mats, door mats, rugs or printed mats. It explains each step, what it checks and what to approve.
The short answer
Custom mat sampling has two parts. A free digital proof confirms the design, layout, size and colours before anything is made. A physical sample, either a stock sample or a pre-production sample, confirms the material, the feel, the backing and the colour on the real fibre. Bulk production starts only after you approve.
Step 1: The free digital proof
Every custom design starts with a free digital proof: your artwork placed on the mat at the size you ordered. It's where you check the layout, the size, the position of the logo, the text and the colours you've asked for.
Read it like a buyer, not a designer. Is the logo the right way up for someone walking in? Is anything important too close to the border? Is the spelling right in every language? Our custom logo floor mat artwork guide has a checklist for this step.
Step 2: A physical sample
A screen can't show how a mat feels. A physical sample answers the questions a proof can't:
- Material and feel: the pile height, the softness and the weight of the mat.
- Backing: how the backing grips the floor it will sit on.
- Colour on the real fibre: a colour on nylon pile or a polyester surface never looks exactly like the same colour on a monitor.
- Size and edges: how the finished size and edge look at the door or on the counter.
There are two kinds. For an existing design or a standard construction, a stock sample can be sent from the warehouse, so you can judge the material quickly. For a custom logo mat where brand colours matter, a pre-production sample in your design is made for approval, matched to your Pantone references, before bulk printing starts.
How long custom mat sampling takes
Timings depend on the product. A few examples from our range:
- Digital proof: free, and the first step for every custom design.
- OEM PVC drawer liners: a sample is ready within 3 working days.
- Bulk production after approval: custom orders typically take 20–30 days, stock items 7–15 days, plus shipping.
Build the sampling time into your schedule. Approving a proof in a hurry to save a week is the most common reason a bulk order disappoints.
What to check before you approve
Approve against the job the mat has to do, not just the look. For an entrance mat, check the backing and the face material against the floor and the traffic; our guide to non-slip backing for custom logo floor mats explains what to look for. For carpet tiles, check the colour against the batch you'll install, as our checklist for wholesale carpet tile orders explains.
If something isn't right, say exactly what: "the red is too dark, match Pantone 186 C" gets a better second sample than "the colour is off".
After approval: production checks
Once the sample is approved, the bulk order is made to that standard. Before shipping, orders go through three checks: material testing, an anti-slip and performance check, and a final visual inspection.
How to start
