Washable Kids Rugs: What Retailers Should Check Before Listing a Rug as Machine-Washable

"Machine-washable" sells kids' rugs, and it's also the claim that most often comes back as a one-star review. Here's what makes a kids' rug washable and what to check before you put the word on a listing.

A parent buys a kids' rug because the listing says machine-washable. Two months later they wash it, and the edges curl or the backing comes out cracked. The review says "not washable", and the retailer takes the return.

Washable kids' rugs are one of the most searched kids' rug types, and "washable" is the claim that most often goes wrong. This guide explains what makes a kids' rug washable and what to check before you print the word on a label.

The short answer

A washable kids' rug needs a printed synthetic surface, a non-slip backing made to go through the wash, finished edges and a size that fits a domestic washing machine. Before listing a rug as washable, wash samples yourself following the care label you plan to print.

What makes a kids' rug washable

Four parts decide whether a washable kids' rug survives the machine:

  • Surface: our printed kids' rugs use a faux-wool, flannel or nylon face, printed digitally in full colour, and are made to be stain-resistant and machine-washable. The low pile doesn't shed.
  • Backing: the non-slip layer is the part most likely to fail in the wash. Ours use a TPR or latex backing; ask us which suits the size and use you plan.
  • Edges: finished edges stop fraying and curling after washing, and the edge finish can be specified.
  • Size: a rug that doesn't fit a home washing machine isn't washable for most families, whatever the label says.

Size and thickness decide if it fits the machine

Our kids' rugs are 0.23″–0.35″ (about 6–9 mm) thick overall and fold, which helps them fit a drum. A 3x5′ rug is the easiest size to wash at home; 4x6′ and 5x7′ rugs may need a large-capacity machine. Say so on the listing rather than leaving customers to find out.

If you sell larger sizes, consider offering a smaller washable rug alongside them for the messiest spot in the room.

Write care instructions that protect the backing

Washable rug care labels usually ask for a cool, gentle wash, no bleach and air drying, because high heat in a tumble dryer is hard on a non-slip backing. We confirm the care instructions for your construction so you can print them on the label and the listing. Clear care instructions prevent most "not washable" returns.

Test samples before you list

A wash test costs a few samples and an afternoon. It's the cheapest insurance a kids' rug range can buy:

  • Wash a sample rug several times following your care label.
  • Check the colour, the edges and the backing after each wash.
  • Lay the washed rug on a hard floor and check it still grips.
  • Keep the washed samples; they answer customer complaints faster than any spec sheet.

Designs for a washable kids' rug range

Washable rugs sell best where the mess is: bedrooms, playrooms and nurseries. Cartoon and character designs, road layouts and educational letters and numbers all work on the same washable construction, so one construction can carry a whole range. How to order

Send the designs, sizes, quantities and the care label you plan to print. Our kids' rugs have a reference price of US$3–7 per square metre, confirmed in the quote; stock items typically ship in 7–15 days and custom orders in 20–30 days.
