Children's Road Rugs and Car Play Mats: A Wholesale Buyer's Guide
A children's road rug keeps a toy car busy for an hour and protects the floor while it does. Here's how toy shops, kids' homeware retailers and brands specify a custom road rug range: layout, surface, backing, sizes and bundles.

A four-year-old drives a toy car along a printed road, past the school, round the roundabout, into the car park and back again. Forty minutes later the car is still going. That's why a children's road rug sells: parents see a toy that keeps a child busy on the floor, and the rug protects the floor while it does.
This guide is for toy shops, kids' homeware retailers, online sellers and toy brands planning a custom children's road rug or car play mat range. It covers the layout, the surface, the backing, the sizes and the bundles that make a road rug range work.
The short answer
A children's road rug is a printed kids' rug with a road and town layout that children use as a play surface for toy cars. For a wholesale range, specify a soft low-pile surface, a non-slip TPR or latex backing, a standard size such as 4x6′ or 5x7′, and a layout drawn at toy-car scale. Our road rugs have a reference price of US$3–7 per square metre, confirmed in the quote.
Why low pile matters on a car play mat
Toy cars need a surface they can roll on. A deep, fluffy pile swallows the wheels; a low, even pile lets them run. Our printed kids' rugs use a soft, low-pile face in faux wool, flannel or nylon, which shows the printed road markings clearly and gives toy cars something to drive on.
Overall thickness is 0.23″–0.35″ (about 6–9 mm) including the backing, so the rug lies flat on the floor. The pile doesn't shed, which matters on a rug children lie on for most of the afternoon.
Designing the road layout
The layout is what children play with, so it deserves more time than any other decision. Four rules help:
- Draw the road at toy-car scale. Lanes should be wide enough for a typical die-cast or wooden toy car, and two cars should be able to pass.
- Give children places to go: a garage, a petrol station, a school, a park, a car park. Destinations turn a pattern into a game.
- Run some roads off the edge. Children can line up two rugs into a bigger town, and the next design in your range has somewhere to connect.
- Keep text large and short. Shop signs and street names add character, but small text disappears into the pile.
Road and traffic layouts, train tracks and cartoon towns are printed digitally in full colour (CMYK). Printing is a core step in our production of car rugs and children's track rugs, and every layout is confirmed on a free digital proof before production.
Sizes for a road rug range
Our standard kids' rug sizes are 3x5′, 4x6′ and 5x7′, and custom sizes are available. A 3x5′ road rug fits a bedroom corner, a 4x6′ rug suits most playrooms, and a 5x7′ rug gives two children room to play together. Shapes can be rectangular, oval or a custom outline, so a road rug can follow the shape of a race track or a town map.
For a first order, two sizes are usually enough: one price-led size and one larger size for the main playroom. If you're sizing for a specific room or store display, our guide on how to measure for custom rugs turns measurements into a spec the factory can cut to.
Backing, washing and storage
A road rug spends its life on bedroom and playroom floors, often hard floors. Our kids' rugs use a non-slip TPR or latex backing, fold for storage and are machine-washable and stain-resistant, which matters when juice lands on the roundabout. Our article on why kids' rugs need anti-slip backing covers the backing in more detail, and our washable kids' rugs guide explains what to check before you list a rug as washable.
Bundles and packaging
Road rugs are often sold as bundles with toy cars, road signs or a garage. Because the rug folds, it fits gift boxes and e-commerce cartons as well as a flat retail pack. Agree the folded size early; it decides the box, the carton count and the shipping cost.
Toy brands can go further and print their own vehicles and characters into the town; our guide to kids' rug OEM for toy and character brands covers artwork rights and approvals.
Testing for children's products
Rules for children's products differ by country and sales channel. CPC test reports are available for our nylon and polyester children's products; tell us your target market and we'll confirm the documents you need for the exact construction you're buying.
