Kids Rug OEM: How Toy and Character Brands Build a Printed Rug Range

A toy brand already has the characters, the colours and the fans. A printed kids' rug puts all three on the bedroom floor. Here's how an OEM kids' rug programme works, from artwork rights to packaging.

Printed race-track kids rug in a living room

A toy brand already has the characters, the colours and the fans. A printed kids' rug puts all three on the bedroom floor, in a product that sits next to the toys rather than competing with them.

This guide is for toy companies, character and licensing businesses, and retailers building a private-label kids' rug range. It covers how a kids' rug OEM programme works, from artwork to delivery.

The short answer

Kids' rug OEM means a manufacturer prints your artwork on kids' rugs made to your size, shape and packaging, under your brand. You supply the artwork and hold the rights to it, the layout is approved on a digital proof, and the rugs are produced, folded and packed to your specification. Our kids' rugs have a reference price of US$3–7 per square metre.

Artwork rights come first

We print the artwork you send, so the brand owner or licensee is responsible for holding the rights to the characters, logos and designs on the rug. If you're a licensee, check that your licence covers rugs and floor coverings, and build the licensor's approval step into your timeline before you book production.

Send the approved artwork as vector files with Pantone references. Our logo mat artwork guide covers file formats and colour matching.

Turning a character into a rug design

A rug is seen from above and from a distance, so artwork made for a toy box doesn't always work on the floor. Four rules help:

  • Scale up: characters should be large enough to read from standing height.
  • Give the rug something to do: roads, tracks, games or letters keep children on it longer than a single character does.
  • Mind the edges and folds: keep faces and logos away from the border and the fold lines.
  • Use solid backgrounds: they print cleanly and look tidy after everyday use.

Every design is printed digitally in full colour (CMYK) and confirmed on a free digital proof before production. A road or town layout featuring your vehicles works well for toy-car brands; our children's road rug guide covers layout rules.

Construction, sizes and shapes

Our printed kids' rugs use a soft, low-pile face in faux wool, flannel or nylon on a non-slip TPR or latex backing, 0.23″–0.35″ (about 6–9 mm) thick. They are foldable, stain-resistant and machine-washable, which matters for a product parents will put through the wash.

Standard sizes are 3x5′, 4x6′ and 5x7′, and custom sizes are available. Shapes can be rectangular, oval or a custom outline, such as a character silhouette; our guide to irregular-shaped rugs explains how custom outlines are cut.

Packaging and retail readiness

Kids' rugs fold, so they can be packed into gift boxes, retail cartons or e-commerce mailers. Agree the folded size early; it drives the box, the carton count and the shipping cost. Print the care instructions on the label, and see our guide on washable kids' rugs before you promise "machine-washable" on the box.

Children's product requirements

Rules for children's products differ by country and sales channel, and licensors often add their own. CPC test reports are available for our nylon and polyester children's products; tell us your target markets and we'll confirm the documents you need.

Planning the first order

Start with two or three designs in one or two sizes. Order samples, check the print against your brand colours, wash one, and photograph them for your listings. Custom orders typically ship in 20–30 days, so plan launches and seasonal drops around that lead time. Then send us your artwork and range plan, or see the washable cartoon kids' room rug and the custom printed kids road rug.
