How to Care for Custom Rugs: A Cleaning Guide Retailers and Hotels Can Pass On
A custom rug that's cleaned the wrong way fades, curls or loses its grip long before it wears out. Here's how to care for custom printed rugs and door mats, and what care instructions retailers and hotels should give their customers and staff.

A hotel housekeeper sees a coffee stain on a custom rug, grabs the strongest cleaner on the trolley and scrubs. The stain goes. So does the colour around it. Most custom rugs that look tired after a year haven't worn out; they've been cleaned the wrong way.
This guide is for retailers, hotels and facility managers who buy custom rugs and printed mats and need to tell customers or staff how to look after them. It covers routine care, spills, washing and storage, and what to put on a care card.
The short answer
To care for custom rugs, vacuum regularly without a beater bar, blot spills instead of rubbing, and wash only the constructions made for washing: our printed area rugs are machine-washable and our door mats can be shaken, brushed, vacuumed, washed and air-dried. Dry rugs flat and away from direct heat, and rotate them so wear and light fall evenly.
Know what your custom rug is made of
Care starts with construction. Our custom printed area rugs have a soft, low-pile face in faux wool, flannel or nylon on a non-slip TPR or latex backing, 0.23″–0.35″ (about 6–9 mm) thick. They are foldable, machine-washable, stain-resistant and don't shed. Our printed door mats use a nylon or polyester face on a latex or TPR backing, and our commercial door mats use nylon on rubber.
Put the construction on the care card. A customer who knows the rug is machine-washable won't send it to a dry cleaner, and a housekeeper who knows the backing is rubber won't use a solvent on it.
Routine care: vacuum, shake and rotate
Dry dirt does most of the damage. Grit works into the pile and wears it down every time someone walks across. Vacuum custom rugs regularly with suction only, without a rotating beater bar, which can pull at the pile and the edges. Smaller rugs and door mats can simply be taken outside and shaken out or brushed.
Rotate a custom rug every few months. Turning it round spreads the foot traffic and the sunlight more evenly, so one end doesn't fade or flatten faster than the other.
Spills and stains: blot, don't scrub
Act quickly and blot the spill with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside in. Rubbing pushes the liquid deeper into the pile and spreads it. If a mark remains, use a little mild detergent in water, test it on a corner first, then blot again with clean water to rinse.
Avoid bleach and strong solvents on printed rugs. The printed colour sits in the fibres, and harsh chemicals can lift it along with the stain. Our stain-resistant faces help here, because most everyday spills stay near the surface long enough to blot away.
Machine washing custom rugs and door mats
Our printed area rugs are machine-washable and foldable, so a rug that fits the drum can be washed rather than sent out. Wash on a gentle cycle at a low temperature, without bleach, and don't tumble dry at high heat. Those are common washing practices for printed rugs with rubber or TPR backings, and your care card should state the settings you want customers to use.
Door mats can be washed and air-dried too. For hotel and commercial use, our washable kids rugs guide explains what to check before labelling any rug as machine-washable.
Drying and storing a custom rug
Dry custom rugs flat or hung over a rail, away from radiators and direct sun. Heat can distort a rubber or TPR backing and make the edges curl. Make sure the rug is fully dry before it goes back on the floor, so moisture isn't trapped against the floor underneath.
If a rug is stored between seasons, roll it rather than folding it tightly, wrap it in breathable fabric rather than plastic, and keep it somewhere dry.
Protecting the floor under the custom rug
Our custom rugs already have a non-slip backing. On smooth hard floors, or under large rugs that people walk across all day, a rug pad adds grip and cushioning and keeps the rug from creeping. Our article on felt-and-rubber vs grip rug pads helps you choose one.
What to put on a custom rug care card
If you sell custom rugs or place them in hotel rooms, a short care card prevents most damage. Keep it to five lines:
- Construction: face material and backing.
- Routine care: vacuum without a beater bar, or shake out; rotate every few months.
- Spills: blot with a clean cloth; mild detergent only; no bleach or solvents.
- Washing: the cycle, temperature and drying method you recommend.
- Drying and storage: dry flat away from direct heat; roll, don't fold tightly, for storage.
