Floor Mats for Warehouses and Distribution Centres: Staff Entrance, Packing Stations, Offices and Break Rooms

A warehouse floor is concrete, the packing shift is eight hours long and the staff entrance takes every shift change in one go. Here's which floor mats warehouses and distribution centres order for each zone, and where mats should never go.

6am at a distribution centre. The night shift walks out as the day shift walks in, and two hundred people cross the staff entrance in fifteen minutes, some of them straight off a wet car park. On the mezzanine, the office team starts work at their desks. Downstairs, the packers take their places at the benches, where they will stand on concrete until the end of the shift.

This guide is for warehouse and logistics managers, facilities teams and the fit-out and safety suppliers who equip them. It covers floor mats for warehouses zone by zone, and what to send a supplier when you order.

The short answer

Warehouses and distribution centres need a heavy logo entrance mat at the staff and visitor doors, industrial anti-fatigue mats at every packing, picking and workstation where people stand, carpet tiles and chair mats in the office, and an anti-fatigue kitchen mat where staff stand in the canteen or break room. Keep anti-fatigue mats out of forklift and pallet-truck routes: they are made for people to stand on, not for wheels.

Zone by zone

This list sums up which mat goes where in a typical warehouse or distribution centre.

  • Staff and visitor entrance: printed rubber logo mat outside, nylon logo mat inside
  • Packing, picking and workstations: industrial anti-fatigue mats made to the size of each station
  • Office and mezzanine: carpet tiles, plus chair mats under desk chairs
  • Canteen and break room: anti-fatigue kitchen mat behind the serving counter
  • Forklift routes and loading docks: no anti-fatigue mats

Staff and visitor entrance: a mat for every shift change

A shift change puts the whole team through one door in a few minutes, so the staff entrance mat has to be big enough to catch water and grit from a crowd. Outside, a printed outdoor rubber logo mat has a 2000gsm anti-slip rubber backing and is made for continuous outdoor use. For an exposed, busy door, the heavier constructions work hardest: MC-2200 (700 g/m² nylon, 7mm) or MC-2300 (950 g/m² nylon, 8mm).

Inside the door, a nylon logo mat catches what gets past the first mat, and the visitor entrance can carry the company logo for drivers, auditors and customers. The heavier piles hold more dirt and water, and the extra weight keeps the mat flat.

Packing and picking stations: industrial anti-fatigue mats

Packers and pickers stand on concrete for a full shift, repeating the same movements at the same bench. An industrial anti-fatigue mat puts a cushioned PU foam layer between the floor and their feet to ease pressure on the feet, knees and lower back, with commercial-grade cushioning made for 8-hour standing shifts.

Industrial anti-fatigue mats are made to the size and shape you specify, so the mat can match the standing zone at each station: a long run in front of a packing bench, a single station at a label printer, or an irregular shape around a conveyor or scale. A non-slip base keeps the mat in place, a bevelled edge makes it easier to step on and off, and the surface wipes clean of packing dust and tape offcuts.

Measure where people actually stand and move, not the whole bench; our guide to specifying industrial anti-fatigue mats shows how to map the standing zones and choose density and thickness for the shift and the floor.

Keep mats out of the forklift routes

Anti-fatigue mats belong where people stand, not where forklifts, pallet trucks and roll cages drive. Wheels can push a cushioned mat out of place or damage the foam, and a mat in a vehicle route becomes something to trip over. Lay each mat inside the station footprint, and mark the walkways and vehicle routes around it, not across it.

Industrial anti-fatigue mats can be made in a colour that marks the work zone, and with your logo or a zone name, which helps keep each mat at the station it was made for.

Office and mezzanine: carpet tiles and chair mats

The warehouse office takes boots straight off the warehouse floor. Modular office carpet tiles come in standard sizes of 50×50cm, 25×100cm and 60×60cm, in nylon, polypropylene or polyester faces, and a stained or worn tile near the door can be replaced on its own instead of recarpeting the room.

Under each desk chair, a clear PVC chair mat protects the floor from castor wear. Clear chair mats come in sizes such as 90×120cm (36″×48″) and 122×122cm (48″×48″), in thicknesses from 1.5mm to 3mm, with a smooth base for hard floors or a gripped base for carpet.

Canteen and break room: anti-fatigue kitchen mats

Where a distribution centre runs its own canteen, the serving staff stand behind the counter for the whole service. The solid-grip anti-fatigue kitchen mat has a cushioned PU / PVC foam core, a waterproof, stain-resistant surface that wipes clean and a solid grip base, with commercial-grade versions made for 8-hour shifts.

Rolling out to several sites

A logistics group with several warehouses can approve one entrance mat design and have it made in the size each door needs. The store-branded logo entrance mat in MC-2000 (600 g/m² nylon, 6mm, MOQ 100m²) can be packed and labelled per site, with agreed tolerances of ±3% on size, ±10% on weight and ±3% on quantity. Our guide to logo mats for multiple locations explains how to plan the rollout.

How to order

Send the entrance sizes, a list of stations with the standing area at each, the office floor area and number of desk chairs, quantities and your logo. Logo mats are confirmed on a free digital proof before production, and stock items typically ship in 7–15 days and custom orders in 20–30 days, plus shipping; MOQ is confirmed in the quote.
